Description

Dragging tubes, finesse jigs, and Neko rigs across offshore structure requires a rod that maintains bottom contact while still delivering solid hooksets at distance. The Lookout’s longer 7'6" platform extends casting range and improves line control when working baits across rock, sand, and deep structure. Its quick tip keeps jigs moving cleanly across the bottom while the backbone loads smoothly on the hookset and transitions into a controlled bend that keeps aggressive smallmouth pinned during the fight.

A Deep Water Smallmouth Weapon

I've had a couple of days to put this ALX rod to the test, focusing on deep-water (20-35 ft) presentations with both tubes and 3/8 oz finesse jigs. The rod's sensitivity is its standout feature; the feel is exceptional, allowing you to distinguish between rock, sand, and the most subtle bites. It has the perfect tip for crisply popping a jig off a rock without losing contact with the bottom.

In terms of fish handling, the rod is excellent. I managed to land a 5.45 lb smallmouth, and the rod performed flawlessly. There's more than enough backbone to pin the fish on the hookset, yet it transitions into a smooth parabolic bend that absorbs headshakes and controls the fish without requiring you to back off the drag.

This is a long rod, and because of that, it can feel a bit heavy if you're using it for vertical presentations. My approach was to fish it with the rod tip down, dragging the bait over structure. This technique makes the rod feel perfectly balanced and substantially reduces fatigue. As a bonus, its length makes it a casting machine. I was easily putting a 3/8 oz jig 120 feet from the boat, a critical capability in the ultra-clear waters of Lake Huron where long-distance presentations are a must.

Best tube rod I’ve used!

I used to always use the ikos hammer 73 for dragging tubes, and it worked really well for me. However the additional length of this model is what intrigued me on the lookout. After using it, I won’t use anything else! It has a great action and really loads up well on the hookset, perfect for keeping those acrobatic smallmouth pinned!
